The Evolution of the Protection of Designations of Origin and Geographical Indications

The revision of the Lisbon Agreement for the Protection of Appellations of Origin and their International Registration and the 1967 Act are important because of the adherence of countries or a community of countries to a modern international instrument, the harmonization of legislations, the parallelism with the regulations contained in the Agreements on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights -TRIPS- and the strengthening of these modalities as mechanisms for development and improvement of the living conditions of the inhabitants of specific geographical areas, among the most relevant ones.
